Coach Selekedi Mogale Speaks On The 2024 Success Story of the U15 Team
Author: Erica MathyeThe year 2024 will forever be etched in Coach Selekedi Mogale’s memory, as he led the Mamelodi Sundowns U15 side to an extraordinary season.
The team triumphed in several prestigious competitions, including the Gauteng Development League (GDL) Top 8, the African Schools Championship National, the Kapstadt Cup, the COSAFA African Schools Championship, and, most recently, another victory in the GDL.

As the year comes to a close, Coach Selekedi Mogale took a moment to reflect on the team’s remarkable performances.

“This year has been a fantastic one for the club, the boys in different divisions and in a way for myself. As the technical team, our goals for the team were clear: first to win multiple titles, and second to lay the groundwork for our players to make their mark in the junior national teams. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished. In terms of forming a base for the Junior National Teams, I am thrilled to share that eight of our players were selected for the Pan-African U15 Schools team. Even more exciting, we now have three of our fourteen-year-olds in the U17 National boys’ team. These young players have jumped two age groups to represent the country, which far exceeded our expectations,” he said.
Looking ahead to the new season, after setting the bar extremely high for both his squad and the league, Mogale acknowledged that it won’t be easy to surpass this season’s achievements, but emphasized that The Sky is The Limit when aiming for the upper echelons of the game.

“It’s a great achievement to earn 91 points, and we have set a new record in the GDL U15 for the most points. Breaking this record will not be easy, as it will require us to drop no more than seven points throughout the entire season. We just need to be patient in how we add quality to strengthen the team and better our performances. For the players, it is about setting new individual goals, whether it is goal-scoring, defending, or passing. I am excited about the challenge, and I hope the players are too. The support that we have received from the Mamelodi Sundowns management is unbelievable. We have to repay the team for the believe that they have in us,” he said.

With the season now complete, the youth tactician is looking forward to the festive season, eager to unwind and spend quality time with his loved ones. He also shared that Christmas is one of his favorite holidays.
“Christmas is not just a family day but a family period. It is a time to give your loved ones the attention they deserve, something that can sometimes be lacking due to work commitments. It is a chance to truly be present for them.. The Festive Season is all about giving that time back to our loved ones who support us through this journey.”

He concluded by stating that while the off-season is a time to step away from football, he plans to stay engaged by watching more football and preparing for the next season.

“I will be watching more football, replenishing my spirit and spending time with my family. I will also begin brainstorming ideas for the 2025 GDL season. It’s not easy to unwind after such a successful season, especially knowing that our rivals will be planning for us. So, while I’m cautious about that, I believe spending quality family time at home will be the perfect way to relax.”
