Author: John AliuThe Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team was recently named the first African club to participate in the highly regarded 2024 Women’s Cup tournament. This year’s four-team inter-club competition will take place in the United States on August 14 and 17. Banyana Ba Style will compete against hosts Kansas City Current, Spain’s Atletico Madrid, and Vissel Kobe of Japan.

The reigning CAF Women’s Champions League and Hollywoodbets Super League Champions will play against Kansas City Current on the 14th, while Atlético de Madrid will face Kobe in the tournament’s opener. The winners will play for the Championship Title on the 17th, with the third-place match also taking place on that same day.
Lebohang Ramalepe has outlined her expectations ahead of the tournament, “We aim to do well and play our normal football so that we can be invited again. The competition will allow us to measure ourselves against top international teams. We are looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to showcase our talent on a global stage.”
The pacy right-sided wing-back also believes the trip to the United States will prove crucial for the CAF Champions League title defense.
“This year’s CAF competition will be tougher than last year; hence, we need all the preparation we can get. We see this trip as an opportunity to further gain lessons that will help us in our title defense,” Ramalepe concluded.
Chuene Morifi also voiced her expectations for the upcoming competition, “We just want to compete and win every tournament we participate in, that is how we are conditioned. We achieved that feat last year and that remains our goal. All opponents are top teams. Thus, we must be prepared and focused to win.”

The left-footed defender also hailed the tournament as an opportunity to benefit younger players within the team.

“We have a highly talented group of young girls coming through the ranks and this competition will help them to compete on a global stage. It will also be good preparation for going into the CAF Women’s Champions League,” Morifi added.

This year’s edition of the Women’s Cup will take place in Kansas City at the state-of-the-art CPKC Stadium, which was opened this year as the first privately financed facility exclusively designed for a professional women’s soccer team.
