Author: John AliuKobamelo Kodisang’s European experience will no doubt be pivotal as the winger seeks to make a significant impact in his debut season with Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 25-year-old winger, who joined the Brazilians from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Moreirense, was brimming with excitement after his move, stating, “This is a fantastic Club; the energy and atmosphere around the team are amazing. The stature of Mamelodi Sundowns is massive, not just in South Africa but across the continent. It is a Club with a rich history, high ambitions and a winning mentality, which is something I am proud to be a part of.”

Having spent considerable time plying his trade in Portugal, Kodisang expressed his admiration for the facilities at Chloorkop, describing them as world-class. “The level of professionalism here is top-notch; the doors are always open and everything is organized to help us focus on our performance. The training grounds, the staff, the support structure—it is all set up to help players succeed.”

He went on to express his eagerness to make an impact during his debut season with Bafana Ba Style, saying, “I am looking forward to working hard, learning from my teammates and contributing to the Club’s success. We have an opportunity to win an eighth consecutive league title, which would be a huge achievement. Additionally, I am excited to make our mark in the CAF competitions and other domestic tournaments. Sundowns is a Club that always aims for the top and I am determined to play my part in achieving that.”

After spending two years with the Club, he moved to another now-defunct team, Bidvest Wits, where he continued to develop his skills. His big European break came in 2018 when he signed with Sanjoanense in Portugal, before moving to SC Braga B, a critical step in his career abroad.

In August 2022, he signed a season-long loan deal with Moreirense in Liga Portugal 2. He made an immediate impact by scoring 11 goals in 25 appearances, significantly contributing to their promotion to the top tier. His outstanding performances earned him a spot in the Liga Portugal Meu Super Team of the Season for his role in securing the second division title with FC Moreirense.

Kodisang, who made his Bafana Bafana debut against Namibia last year in a friendly match, believes his familiarity with several Sundowns players from the national team will help him settle in faster. “I feel more comfortable knowing there are players here I have worked with before, and I am confident that will help me hit the ground running as I integrate into the team.”

The highly-rated winger also highlighted how his philosophy aligns with the team’s game plan. “The style and mentality are all about dominating games and scoring goals, and that excites me as an attacker. The system gives us plenty of opportunities in front of goal and it is designed to bring out the best in us offensively.”
