Reflecting on his Ballon d’Or experience, Williams shared, “It was a massive honour for me and a huge achievement—a priceless moment to be among the elite, the best of the best, and to rub shoulders with them. It gives me even more motivation to strive for greater things and further inspire young boys and girls from across the African Continent.”
The atmosphere at the awards was electric, with Williams mingling with numerous football stars and nominees. He fondly recalled the warm welcome he received, stating, “I met several football stars and managers and had the chance to greet all the nominees in attendance. They were warm and welcoming, which was great to see. They are not just talented footballers but also wonderful human beings.”
Williams enjoyed a light-hearted exchange with fellow African star Ademola Lookman, a Nigerian player with whom he has shared competitive encounters during the AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. “We had a nice conversation, wished each other well and talked about seeing each other soon at the CAF Awards Ceremony that will take placein Morocco. It was great to have someone I am very familiar with, and they made me feel at ease. Indeed, it was a massive evening for world football.”
Discussions at the ceremony also touched on South Africa, with Lookman and other attendees expressing interest in visiting the country.
“It’s nice to know that people are keen to visit our Country. I shared some recommendations on the best places to explore, from our beautiful beaches to vibrant cities and rich cultural heritage. It’s an incredible feeling to showcase South Africa in such a positive light and I hope they get to experience the warmth of our people and the beauty of our landscapes.”
Williams’ accomplishments were further celebrated as he finished an impressive ninth in the Yashin Trophy, becoming the first goalkeeper from an African club to achieve such an honor.
He is also nominated for three accolades at the upcoming CAF Awards: African Player of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year, thanks to his outstanding performances for both Mamelodi Sundowns and the Bafana Bafana.
