Author: John AliuMamelodi Sundowns capped off a remarkable season by winning the Women’s 2025 Gauteng Sasol League — a triumph that underscores the Club’s commitment to nurturing young talent.Guided by Head Coach Rhoda Mulaudzi, with support from Asa Rabalao, Kholosa Biyana, and goalkeeper coach Andile Dlamini, the Under-17 side won 28 of the 30 matches played, scoring 143 goals and conceding just 14, to secure 85 points and a third consecutive title. Their discipline, talent and hunger to grow has laid a strong foundation for the senior (Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies) team’s future.

Looking back at this year’s campaign, Rabalao reflected on her personal journey as a coach and mentor.

“What I am most grateful for is seeing myself grow within the coaching space while witnessing the Under-17 team achieve great things. It has been inspiring to watch some of our players develop into stronger and more confident athletes. Each day has been a learning experience and seeing the team’s progress motivates me to push harder as a coach.”

Sharing her perspective as a former Sundowns Ladies player and a coach, Asa explained how her experience on the field has translated into her mentoring role.

Being a role model allows them to see a pathway to success and it also pushes me to understand the game more deeply from a coaching perspective. It is a two-way growth process: I help them, and in doing so, I continue to grow myself.”

The Masandawana goalkeeper also offered guidance to the young players as they head into the festive season.

“I would like to remind the girls to stay safe and enjoy time with their families. Holidays are important, but it is equally essential to keep their focus and avoid distractions so that they come back next year stronger and ready to tackle the challenges ahead. Discipline and consistency are key,” she said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity that Mamelodi Sundowns has given me and for the trust placed in me as an Assistant Coach. The commitment from the players and the support from their parents have been incredible. Together with the Head Coach and our team, we have created an environment where young players can thrive.”

Reflecting on her coaching journey, Biyana said, “It is so exciting to share my experiences and guide the next generation. Watching the players apply what they have learned, grow their skills and develop confidence makes this role incredibly rewarding. Seeing them succeed brings a sense of fulfilment that is hard to match.”
The midfielder also stressed the importance of maintaining focus during the festive break.

“I would tell the girls to enjoy their holidays, but not forget that they are still athletes. They should continue training lightly, touch the ball often and take care of themselves so they return in peak condition. At the same time, spending quality time with family is important—it is all about balance,” she said.

The alignment between the Under-17 team and the first team ensures that when the girls step up, they are prepared and familiar with the Club’s philosophy. This continuity is vital for building sustainable success.”
When asked about a symbolic “festive gift” for the team, Biyana suggested a soccer ball.

“We always think about training, but rest is also important. A soccer ball is a reminder to keep practicing even during the holidays, to stay motivated and to understand that each touch brings them closer to becoming better players. It symbolizes both discipline and joy,” she explained.

Describing the team’s festive mood, Biyana said: “Christmas,” while Rabalao described it as “joyous,” capturing the energy, optimism and camaraderie that have driven the Under-17 squad throughout the season. Both coaches emphasized that their time with the young players is as much about mentorship and character-building as it is about football.
