Beating the Best:
Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Strike Steals the Spotlight
Author: John AliuLucas Ribeiro Costa returned from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup not only as a proud representative of Mamelodi Sundowns but as a rising global football icon. His breathtaking goal against Borussia Dortmund was not only crucial in the tournament but was later named the Goal of the Tournament, a feat that saw him eclipse some of the game’s most celebrated names, including Lionel Messi and Jamal Musiala.
Reflecting on his return home, Costa describes his break in Brazil as deeply restorative.

“My time back home during the pre-season break was very special. It had been a long and demanding season, so spending quality time with my family meant everything. I was able to reconnect with my roots, enjoy some home-cooked meals and just soak in the love and support from those closest to me. The break recharged me emotionally and mentally. I came back to South Africa more motivated than ever.”

The highly-rated forward also acknowledges how the Club World Cup elevated his status in Brazil.

There was so much respect, so much admiration—not just from football fans but from the community at large. It made me realise how far-reaching our performances can be. The tournament elevated my profile, not just in South Africa but also in Brazil.”

A major highlight of the competition was the encounter against Fluminense—a club from Costa’s home country of Brazil.

“That match was unforgettable. It was my first time playing against a team from Brazil professionally. Emotionally, it was overwhelming to be on the same pitch as players I had followed while growing up. Fluminense are a fantastic side and even though the match ended in a draw, it was an incredible experience for me. It felt like everything had come full circle.”

Of course, the moment that defined Costa’s tournament was his sensational strike against Borussia Dortmund, which earned him the Goal of the Tournament accolade.

That is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. It was definitely one of the best goals of my career. I have to give credit to my teammates and coaches because we worked together to create that opportunity. As a group, we believed in our quality, and I am proud to have represented Sundowns on the world stage.”

Interestingly, Costa draws a parallel between that goal and another spectacular strike he delivered against Orlando Pirates in the domestic league which has been nominated for the Betway Premiership Goal of the Season.

“Yes, the goal against Dortmund reminded me a lot of the one I scored against Orlando Pirates. Both required a certain level of vision, precision and instinct. For me, those goals reflect the quality we train with every day at Sundowns. I am very grateful to have scored such goals, not only because they are beautiful, but because they helped the team in important moments.”
Costa has also earned nominations for both the PSL Footballer of the Season and the Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, honors that speak volumes about his consistency and impact.

“It is an incredible moment in my career. These nominations represent more than individual success. They reflect the consistency and hard work I have been able to deliver over the season. But once again, none of it would be possible without the support of my coaches and teammates. They push me every day to perform at my highest level. I would love to win these awards, not just for myself, but for everyone who has supported me since the beginning.”

Looking ahead, Costa is clear about where his focus lies. “My mind and focus are fully with Mamelodi Sundowns. This upcoming season, I want to continue delivering high levels of performance and help the team achieve more success. The expectations are always high, and we embrace that. Personally, I am looking to contribute even more, whether it is through goals, assists, or leadership on the pitch. It is going to be another exciting chapter.”
From humble beginnings in Brazil to commanding performances on the global stage, Lucas Ribeiro Costa continues to inspire with his talent, humility and unrelenting work ethic. His story is one of growth, gratitude and a deep love for the beautiful game—one that Mamelodi Sundowns fans will be proud to witness in every match he plays.
