Over 1,000 students welcomed their idols with song, dance and pure joy. The initiative, driven by Sundowns’ commitment to uplifting communities, gave young learners a chance to dream big.
“It was humbling to see the kids welcoming us with such enthusiasm,” said captain Themba Zwane. “It was great sharing this moment with them and taking pictures with the trophy. We hope it inspires them to chase their dreams. That was also in my message to them, to keep pushing, work hard, stay focused, and always respect their elders.”
Nesta, a player who has won everything in football, also shared some wisdom with the Sundowns captain.
“He is an amazing guy, very humble, and it was an honour meeting him”, Zwane said. “He gave me words of advice as a player, a leader, and a captain. He told me to be strong, have character, and always support my team. I appreciate that advice.” Taking the Trophy to the Supporters After an emotional homecoming in Mamelodi, the trophy tour moved to Sammy Marks Square in the heart of Pretoria’s CBD. Nearly 1,900 fans turned up, eager to catch a glimpse of the legendary silverware. Dressed in Mamelodi Sundowns’ famous yellow, supporters chanted and celebrated, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
Beyond the physical stops, the trophy also made appearances across major media platforms, with Sundowns ensuring that every Supporter, whether in the streets, at home, or online, felt connected to this historic moment. A Statement at Loftus Versfeld The highlight of the tour came at Loftus Versfeld, where Mamelodi Sundowns hosted Orlando Pirates in a massive top-of-the-table clash. With FIFA’s delegation, led by Nesta, watching from the stands, Masandawana delivered a performance fitting of champions.
The Captain of the Springboks, Siya Kolisi, was another notable attendee at the match and he also took time to pose with the magnificent trophy at the stand that was set up for supporters to take pictures with the trophy.
Lucas Ribeiro netted a brilliant brace, following Grant Kekana’s opener and Teboho Mokoena added a stunning goal of his own as Sundowns cruised to a 4-1 victory. The win extended their lead at the top of the PSL table, reaffirming their dominance as South Africa’s top side.
At halftime, Chairman Thlopie Motsepe presented Nesta with a special Mamelodi Sundowns jersey. The Italian legend, who lifted the FIFA World Cup with his country in 2006, acknowledged the magnitude of the moment. Having spent a decade at AC Milan, where he won two Serie A titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2007, just a year after his World Cup triumph with Italy, he understands what it takes to compete at the highest level of Club football.
“Participating in the FIFA Club World Cup will be a great opportunity for the Club and the Country to showcase their talent and compete against top-level teams. Anyone who wins the FIFA Club World Cup will be on top of the world.” A Fitting End in the Wild The final stop on the tour was the Ukutula Conservation Center, where Sundowns and the FIFA Club World Cup Trophy took a moment to embrace South Africa’s breathtaking wildlife. Among lions, cheetahs, and other majestic creatures, the trophy stood as a symbol of hope, excellence and pride, qualities that define Mamelodi Sundowns.
This tour was about more than just showcasing silverware. It was about bringing hope, igniting dreams and proving that Mamelodi Sundowns belong on the world’s biggest stage. This was a reminder to the team that as they prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, one thing is certain: they will carry the hopes of Africa with them.
