Building Legacies: Jayden Adams and Denis Onyango’s Champion Stories Author: John AliuPHOTOGRAPHS BY - Backpage PixAs the final whistle echoed across the pitch in the last league game against Magesi FC, the scoreboard told the story: a dominant 2–0 victory for Mamelodi Sundowns. Lucas Ribeiro Costa delivered an impressive brace, sealing what was already apparent — Bafana Ba Style were champions of South Africa once again. For some players, it was a continuation of a legacy. For others, it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
One of those celebrating his first-ever league title was Jayden Adams, the dynamic midfielder who joined the Club in January. In just a few months, he found himself immersed in one of the most competitive environments in African football and emerged victorious.
“Winning this league title means everything to me. It is a moment I have dreamed of since I first kicked a ball back home in Stellenbosch, Cape Town. I would like to dedicate this victory to my family, my friends and everyone back home who has supported me throughout my journey. They have been with me from the beginning, through the ups and downs, and this is just as much their win as it is mine. It is a great achievement and I strongly believe there are many more to come.” Despite being new to Mamelodi Sundowns, Adams quickly found his footing, thanks to the camaraderie and familiarity within the squad.
“Having played with several members of the team at Bafana Bafana, my transition into Mamelodi Sundowns was much easier. There is so much quality here with talented players in every department. Every training session pushes you to improve. The level of professionalism and the winning mentality within the Club is something I deeply admire. Being around players who know how to win has helped me grow tremendously in a short time.”
While Jayden was celebrating his first title, another giant of the game was adding to a legacy that is already unparalleled in the history of South African football. Denis Onyango, the legendary goalkeeper and former captain of the Uganda Cranes, claimed his 12th South African Premier Division title — a feat unmatched by any other player in the league’s history.
For Onyango, this past season was not just about individual glory, but about leadership and legacy. With Sundowns aiming to win their 8th consecutive league title, there were moments when experience had to rise above pressure, especially when the team faced early challenges and when first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was unavailable. I saw it as my responsibility, especially as one of the senior players, to help steady the ship when needed. There were times when the younger players needed guidance, and I tried to be there for them, to show them what this badge represents and what it takes to win consistently. It is about staying the course and never losing sight of the bigger picture.”
Onyango's presence in the dressing room and on the training pitch continues to be a source of inspiration, particularly for the Clubs’ younger players.
“What I always tell the young guys is this: the moment you commit to hard work, and you find yourself in the right environment — like Sundowns — things will begin to open up for you. It is truly incredible to be part of this group that has now won 8 titles in a row. That is not something you take for granted. It speaks to our culture, our discipline and our hunger to keep achieving.”
As he moves toward the twilight years of his playing career, the question naturally arises: What lies ahead for Denis Onyango?
“For me, it is simple — we go again for more. I am still playing and I still feel I have the energy, the strength and the capacity to help this team. The body is responding well and as long as I can contribute, I will continue to give my best. Whether I am starting matches or training alongside the younger players, my goal is always the same — to push the standard higher and help this team continue achieving great things.” PHOTOGRAPH BY - Sundowns ProductionsFrom the excitement of a first-time champion to the seasoned grace of a 12-time winner, this season brought two players from very different journeys together in one shared celebration.
Jayden Adams is just beginning to build his story. Denis Onyango continues to write his glory.
Different paths. One Club. One goal. One golden standard — Mamelodi Sundowns.
