For him, tournament draws are more than just scheduling—they reflect the remarkable progress of the game and the important role clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns play in helping define its future.

“It is exciting to be part of this process. When I played in African competitions, there was always passion, but the organisation, professionalism and exposure were not at the level we see today. To witness the growth, the planning and the ambition of clubs now is a proud moment for everyone involved in African football.”

Katongo, who also played in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for several clubs, including Bidvest Wits, Golden Arrows and Jomo Cosmos, praised the growth of South African football.

“The PSL has improved tremendously over the years. Clubs are performing well in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup and the league is providing a solid foundation for players who go on to represent Bafana Bafana. It is exciting to see African football becoming more competitive and professional.”

On the Champions League draw itself, Katongo described it as a fair challenge for Mamelodi Sundowns, who are drawn in Group C alongside Sudan’s Al Hilal SC, Algeria’s MC Alger and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Saint-Eloi Lupopo.

“It is a good draw for the Club. Sundowns have been performing consistently and we can see how well the Club develops players who go on to represent Bafana Bafana at the international level. That says a lot about the strength of the Club and its contribution to African football.”

Katongo spoke warmly about his close friend and Sundowns goalkeeper coach, Kennedy ‘Kapalaya’ Mweene.

I am rooting for him to have a fantastic run in this season’s CAF Champions League. He was my vice-captain during our time with the national team and I genuinely hope we will have the chance to collaborate again someday to help elevate Zambian football.”

Looking back at his own career, Katongo shared how his experiences abroad shaped his view of African football’s potential.

“Playing in Europe taught me the value of preparation, structure, and discipline. But what makes African football stand out is its flair, resilience and the passion of everyone involved. If young players combine those qualities with professionalism, the future is very bright. African players have everything it takes to compete at the highest level and competitions like the CAF Champions League are the perfect platform to showcase their talent and ambition.”
