Festivities and Passion: Kamza Mbatha Shares His Love for Music and Holiday Celebrations Author: Erica MathyeIf Kamohelo ‘Kamza’ Mbatha is not a name you recognize from the youth channel, KTV, then you are likely familiar with his impactful presence in the world of sportscasting or his contribution to the music industry. With an impressive career spanning over 25 years, Kamza has become a household name in South Africa’s entertainment scene. As a radio and television presenter, music producer (most notably from the IV League), MC, voice-over artist, actor, and gamer amongst others he has built a legacy that reflects his multifaceted talents.
The dynamic entertainer recently sat down with the Mamelodi Sundowns Digital Magazine Crew to share insights into his music journey and what he has in store for the upcoming festive season. How involved are you in music production? I am still involved in music production. 2025 is the year I plan to launch my music library. Essentially, a music library is for content creators and people who need music for their pictures. I feel that the kind of music we enjoy is not well represented, and this is why I wanted to build a proudly South African library that I’m planning to launch soon. From the IV League with Buks and AKA, which song would you consider their biggest hit? It’s a tie between the work we did for ProKid and for Khuli Chana. However, I Want it All is probably the best one. It features AKA, Khuli and Pro, and I think it was a culmination of the sound at the time. That track really exemplified what we were capable of as artists. Also, working with a legend like AKA at an early stage of his career—and ours—to create something like that was definitely our biggest moment. Having worked with AKA, which song would you consider a timeless classic from his catalogue? For me, I’d say Bang has to be the one I go with. Once you hear the instruments of the intro, you understand how musically gifted he was. I think his catalogue is amazing. He did a lot of great work, but from a from a musician’s perspective, having been involved in those early projects, I think Bang is the best song. I also think 24/7/366 is an EP that is not on any of the Digital Service Providers, but it has so many bangers on it. Some tracks made it into the albums, but there is a lot of material there that sums up where we were musically. What do you do during the festive season and does it involve doing some work? The festive season for me is very quiet. I enjoy Johannesburg in December because everyone heads to the coast, so it feels like a mini ghost town. During that time, I just relax, spend time by the pool and have friends over for a braai. I’m a December baby, so for me, it’s also my birthday month. What are your ideal gifts? My ideal Christmas gift this year would be nice OLED monitor because I recently built myself a PC and while the PC is dope, I still need a monitor to complete the setup. Who are your top 3 artists of the year and your take on music in SA? The two artists I have been listening to this year are Gilberto Gil (Grammy award winning musician) and R&B/Soul singer Tamia. I can’t think of a third, but I can say this: there’s been a lot of great music coming out of South Africa this year and I hope it gets even better next year, with the world starting to take notice of our work. What Christmas message would you like to send out to the public at large? Be safe, stay safe and look after those that are close to you. The world could use a little more kindness. Everyone is often focused on being right all the time, but you do not always have to be. This festive season, avoid seeking confrontations. Life is too short to focus on what is wrong in others. Here’s to a successful 2025, filled with more music, kindness and joy. Stay tuned for what’s next from this multifaceted artist!
