Godfrey Sapula Focused on Sustaining Sundowns Ladies’ Winning Legacy in 2026 Author: John AliuAs Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies gear up for another demanding campaign, Coach Godfrey Sapula insists that the team’s ambition remains unchanged, with the expanded Hollywoodbets Super League “Amplified” format set to raise the intensity and competitiveness of the 2026 season.
With the new structure bringing fresh challenges, heightened expectations and stronger opposition, Sapula sees the campaign as an opportunity for the Brazilians to evolve while staying rooted in the winning culture that defines the Club. “Our primary objective every season is to uphold the standards and identity of this Football Club. Success is part of who we are, but beyond trophies, we want to keep developing players, improving our football and strengthening the team every year.”
The six-time Hollywoodbets Super League champions have already begun their league campaign emphatically, recording a 6-0 victory over Diepkloof Ladies in their opening fixture. As they continue their title defence, the Club has also strengthened the squad with two confirmed signings, Wendy Shongwe and Gugu Dhlamini, adding further quality and depth to the team for the season ahead.
Despite the strong start and squad reinforcements, Sapula remains focused on maintaining the standards that have made Sundowns Ladies the benchmark in South African women's football. “Every team wants to measure themselves against Sundowns Ladies, so we understand the responsibility that comes with this badge. The league will be competitive again, but our focus is on consistency and delivering high-level performances in every match.”
While domestic success remains central, Coach Godfrey is equally determined to see the two-time CAF Women’s Champions League winners make an even stronger impact on the continent.
“The Champions League is the highest level of club football in Africa, and we understand what it takes to compete at that level. The recent win by our male counterparts in Morocco serves as a motivation to compete and win the CAF Champions League again. We want to continue expanding our presence there and consistently challenge ourselves against the best teams on the continent. Competing internationally also helps the players grow mentally, tactically and physically.”
Balancing domestic and continental commitments demands preparation and precision, and Sapula emphasizes the importance of preparation and squad depth. “Competing on multiple fronts requires discipline and proper player management. We must maintain high fitness levels and ensure every player understands their role. The technical team is constantly refining our preparation to meet the intensity of the season.” After securing domestic success in his first season, the Banyana Ba Style coach believes continuous evolution is essential to sustaining the Club’s dominance.
“Football keeps changing and as coaches, we must adapt. We want to improve our style, become more flexible in different situations and continue developing a modern brand of football that allows players to express themselves while staying tactically disciplined.” With a demanding 2026 calendar ahead, Sundowns Ladies enter the new season with renewed hunger. Under Sapula’s leadership, Banyana Ba Style remain committed to inspiring excellence, maintaining domestic supremacy and strengthening their status as one of Africa’s premier women’s football clubs.
