Hope Through Football: Mamelodi Sundowns, FIFA and Department of Correctional Services Join Forces to Empower Inmates Author: John AliuMamelodi Sundowns Football Club, in collaboration with the Department of Correctional Services and the FIFA Foundation, has officially launched the Twinning Project at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre. This initiative harnesses the power of football as a tool for rehabilitation, personal development and community reintegration, reaffirming the Club’s commitment to uplifting South Africa’s youth and transforming lives through sport.
Chairman Thlopie Motsepe emphasized the Club’s dedication to social responsibility and youth empowerment. Speaking on the Club’s vision for the initiative, he said: “The reason we wanted to be part of this partnership is our commitment to the youth. As a Club, we understand the importance of investing in South Africa’s future and its young minds. Juvenile offenders are often overlooked and neglected because they have made mistakes and are paying the price. But being here means there is hope—hope for rehabilitation, transformation and a second chance. Through the Twinning Project, we are not only teaching football skills but also essential life skills—discipline, teamwork, resilience and accountability—so that when these young men re-enter society, they are prepared for a brighter future.”
The Twinning Project is designed to provide more than just football training. It offers mentorship, structured programs and essential life skills to instill discipline, responsibility and a sense of purpose in participants. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the youths leave Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre with the mindset and skills needed to reintegrate successfully into society. Senior Coach Steve Komphela, known for his wisdom and mentorship, delivered a powerful message to the participants:
“Correctional services exist not just to punish, but to reform. Pain can be beneficial—it reminds us that we are alive and that change is possible. There are moments in life when you go through challenges, but they do not define you. This is just a moment in time and with the right mindset and support, you will return to your communities stronger. It is our responsibility to help you recognize that. FIFA has given us the platform, and we are here to provide you with the support and guidance you need. Never be ashamed of where you are now—be conscious instead of where you want to go. Your current circumstances do not define your final destination.”
Mamelodi Sundowns has long been committed to making a difference beyond the pitch, and this initiative is yet another demonstration of the Club’s values—Ubuntu, perseverance and excellence. By investing in rehabilitation and second chances, the Club is not just shaping footballers, but shaping futures. Defender Keagan Johannes, who was present at the launch, shared his connection to the project. “It is a privilege to be here because this initiative is very personal to me. I grew up in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town—a neighborhood plagued by gang violence. I have seen friends of mine incarcerated, and I know how easy it is to take the wrong path. This project means so much to me because it represents hope. It shows that there are people—government, FIFA and Clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns—who care and who want to make a real difference in our communities.” As the Twinning Project unfolds, it stands as a sign of hope, proving that with the right support, discipline and belief in oneself, transformation is always possible.
