KEGAN JOHANNES DETERMINED TO ENHANCE SUNDOWNS' DEFENSIVE RESILIENCE
Author: John AliuVersatility and flexibility are two key attributes that Kegan Johannes brings to the Mamelodi Sundowns squad. His ability to play both right-back and central defense will undoubtedly provide essential depth as Bafana Ba Style embarks on a demanding season across domestic and continental competitions. The Cape Town-born player joins the Yellow Nation after spending three successful seasons at SuperSport United and has been thrilled with the warm welcome he received since his arrival.

“It has been nothing but wonderful. The reception has been immense and I am truly grateful for the support from my new teammates, the coaches and the supporters. It is clear that this is a Club with a strong sense of community and ambition and I am excited to contribute to our goals this season. I am eager to integrate fully into the team, embrace the opportunities ahead and work together to achieve success in all the competitions we will participate in this season.”

The 23-year-old defender also believes that the move to Chloorkop is the right step for his career. “I understand that joining a Club of this magnitude means there is no room for complacency. There are so many people here who have achieved so much and it is a privilege to be in such an environment. There is a lot to learn from both the coaches and the players because they have consistently proven themselves at the highest level. I am determined to give my all and make a positive contribution, whether it is in defense or anywhere the coach needs me.”

Having faced Sundowns several times during his time at Matsatsantsa, the talented defender readily identified the player who posed the greatest challenge to him on the field.

“It was always difficult to mark Peter Shalulile because he loves making those unpredictable runs. His movement is hard to read and he is always looking for space behind the defenders. You can never afford to switch off when you are up against him. His work rate and how clinical he is in front of goal are truly impressive.”

On which current Sundowns players he looks forward to playing with, Kegan says, “There are so many of them, but I have always wanted to share the pitch with Themba Zwane. His longevity and consistency are remarkable and being able to observe how he approaches the game will be beneficial for my growth as a player. Overall, I am eager to absorb as much as I can from everyone around me.”

Johannes becomes the latest player to make the move from SuperSport United to Chloorkop in recent times, following in the footsteps of Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams, Thapelo Maseko, Aubrey Modiba, Grant Kekana and Sipho Mbule.

The new Sundowns defender also spoke about his style of play and how he can contribute to the team.

“I am a ball-playing defender and can also adapt to different styles of play. I am comfortable with the ball at my feet and enjoy starting attacks from the back. Whether it is playing short, precise passes or looking for longer, more direct balls, I try to provide options for my teammates and help control the tempo of the game. This aligns well with Sundowns’ system and I cannot wait to make my mark at the Club.”
