Kennedy Mweene on AFCON and the Chipolopolo Spirit
© Backpage PixAuthor: John AliuAs AFCON 2025 approaches, Zambia’s Chipolopolo are preparing for Group A clashes with hosts Morocco, Comoros and Mali. Central to their preparations is Mamelodi Sundowns legend Kennedy Mweene, recently appointed Zambia’s goalkeeper coach, bringing experience, vision and leadership to the role. To capture his insights, Sundowns Defender’ Aubrey Modiba—pursuing his broadcasting dream—conducted his first interview. In this exclusive conversation, Mweene reflects on his role, shares lessons from his career and offers guidance on teamwork and mentoring the next generation.
© Backpage PixAubrey Modiba (AM): Kennedy, welcome and congratulations on your appointment as Chipolopolo’s goalkeeper coach. What does this opportunity mean to you personally and professionally?
Kennedy Mweene (KM): “Thank you. It all began at Mamelodi Sundowns. I count myself blessed to be working here as a goalkeeper coach — it has opened many doors. Representing my country in a coaching capacity is something I have always dreamed of. Professionally, it is a chance to grow and contribute to developing goalkeepers at the highest level, helping the next generation reach their potential.”
AM: Having worked at Masandawana for several years after retiring, how will your experience at one of Africa’s biggest Clubs help you in this role?
KM: “My time at Mamelodi Sundowns has been extremely valuable. Participating in the FIFA Club World Cup opened many doors and taught me so much, and I am still learning every day. Now, with AFCON, it is a different challenge, but the lessons remain relevant. Working in a professional, high-pressure environment has taught me the importance of discipline, preparation and continuous improvement. I hope to bring these principles to Chipolopolo and create a culture where our goalkeepers can thrive. I am grateful for the opportunity.”
AM: Madala Kennedy, you were part of Zambia’s AFCON-winning squad in 2012. What lessons from that journey do you hope to pass on to the current generation? I was watching the highlights.
KM: “You must have been at the Development level back in 2012. It is not very different from what I have been doing at Sundowns. The team was mostly made up of players from across Africa, which is similar to Bafana Bafana, because the squad includes many PSL players. In the changing room, once players respect each other and build strong relationships, it naturally translates onto the pitch. That is why I always emphasize the importance of unity and professionalism. For the current generation, both at the Club and in the national team, the lessons are clear: respect, teamwork and understanding each other on and off the pitch are key to achieving success.”
© Backpage PixAM: Zambia has been drawn into Group A with Morocco (the hosts), Mali and Comoros at the AFCON. What are your feelings about this group?
KM: “It is a competitive group, but one we can navigate with the right preparation. As a nation, we are rebuilding, with a mix of experienced and young players who are hungry and competitive. Morocco and Mali are strong sides, so we must approach every game with focus. Comoros can also be dangerous, so it is about respecting every opponent while believing in our own abilities.”
AM: Zambia faced Bafana Bafana in a pre-AFCON friendly. How important was that match for testing combinations and assessing the team?
KM: “The friendly against Bafana Bafana was much needed. It gave us a real opportunity to test different player combinations, see how individuals respond under match conditions and identify areas to improve before AFCON. Even though we lost 3-1, the match showed us where we need to be sharper, both tactically and mentally.”
AM: What can supporters expect from Chipolopolo at AFCON 2025?
AM: “Fans can expect a disciplined, hard-working team that gives everything on the pitch. We want to represent Zambia with pride, play competitive football and show that our team is ready to challenge for honours.”
KM: It is almost Christmas. You and I, together with many other footballers, are away from our families at this time due to club commitments. Many fans will be spending Christmas cheering for the team. What message would you like to share with Zambians during this festive period?
© Backpage PixAM: “I wish all Zambians and South Africans a joyful and safe festive season. We have to look after ourselves and each other — be careful, do not drink and drive. I also wish everyone good health, happiness and memorable moments with family and friends. Enjoy the celebrations and thank you for supporting us — it means a lot to the team.
KM: On a personal note, what does Christmas mean to you, and how do you plan to stay connected with your family while away with the team?
AM: “Christmas is about family, faith and reflection. Even while away, I will make sure to connect with loved ones through calls and video chats. It is important to keep that bond, no matter where I am.”
KM: Let us talk about Sundowns. What do you make of the season so far and the draws for the CAF Champions League?
AM: Let us talk about Sundowns. What do you make of the season so far and the draws for the CAF Champions League?
KM: “One thing I am certain of is that there is always a hunger to win and the Club knows how to perform under pressure. That mentality has been built over years of hard work and success. As a coach, I know we are prepared for high-stakes moments in both the league and the CAF Champions League. The squad has the experience, depth and focus to compete on all fronts. I am confident the team will continue to grow, deliver strong performances and challenge for titles throughout the season.”
Having spent over a decade at Chloorkop as both player and coach, Kennedy Mweene brings a wealth of experience and leadership to his role as Zambia’s goalkeeper coach, inspiring the next generation of goalkeepers. We wish him and the entire Chipolopolo squad every success at AFCON 2025.
