Lebo Mothiba Returns To Bolster Sundowns’ Attack Ahead Of Busy Season

Mothiba’s arrival comes at a critical time for Bafana Ba Style as they aim for dominance in both the domestic and international scene.
We caught up with Mothiba at Chloorkop for an exclusive interview about his return, his ambitions and how he plans to help Sundowns achieve continental and global success.
Mamelodi Sundowns FC (MSFC): Welcome home, Lebo! How does it feel to be back in South Africa?
Lebo Mothiba (LM):
“It feels amazing to be back home after so many years in France. I have spent over a decade in Europe, and while it was a great experience, there is nothing like being home—close to my family, friends and the South African football culture.”
MSFC: What do you miss most about France?
LM:
“France became a second home for me, so I will miss my friends, teammates and the experiences I had there. Also, the food—especially croissants and good French cuisine!”
MSFC: Have you kept in touch with any of your former teammates?
LM:
“I still talk to a lot of the guys I played with in France, especially from RC Strasbourg and Lille. We built strong friendships over the years, so we regularly check in on each other.”
MSFC: What does it mean to you to be part of such a successful and prestigious Club as Mamelodi Sundowns?
LM:
“It is a huge honor. Sundowns is one of the biggest Clubs in African football, with a winning mentality and world-class ambitions. I am excited to be part of a team that competes for trophies and plays at the highest level.”
MSFC: What are your thoughts on the facilities at Chloorkop and how was the reception from the team?
LM:
“The facilities are top-class, definitely on par with what I have experienced in Europe. The reception was fantastic—everyone welcomed me warmly, and the coaches and players made me feel at home immediately. It is a great environment to be in.”
MSFC: What are your personal goals for the upcoming season, and how do you plan to achieve them?
LM:
“My main goal is to contribute to the team as much as possible—whether that is by scoring goals, assisting, or helping the squad in any way. I also want to stay fit and consistent throughout the season. I will achieve this by working hard in training, staying disciplined and giving my best in every game.”
MSFC: What sets you apart from other players and makes you a valuable addition to the Sundowns squad?
LM:
“I bring experience from playing in one of Europe’s top leagues. My strength, hold-up play and finishing ability are my key attributes. I also have a strong work ethic and a team-first mentality, which fits well with the Sundowns philosophy.”
MSFC: Who are some of your footballing role models or inspirations? Anyone from Sundowns?
LM:
“Growing up, I looked up to Mario Balotelli—his physicality and finishing were incredible. In terms of my career, my coaches in France played a big role in shaping me as a player. From Sundowns, I have always admired legends like Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda for their leadership and impact on the team.”
MSFC: As a striker, which Sundowns player would you have dreaded to play against?
LM:
“I would say Sundowns have always had top defenders over the years. Lately, I would say Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana as they have been very solid, disciplined and good in one-on-one situations.”
MSFC: Who inspired you to play football, and at what age did you begin?
LM:
“My family always supported my football journey, and my love for the game started at a young age. I started playing seriously when I was around 10 years old, and from there, I just kept pushing to improve.”
MSFC: Are there any hidden talents that people might be surprised to know about?
LM:
“Not many people know this, but I enjoy drawing—that is what I used to do at school.”
MSFC: If you were not a professional footballer, what career path would you have pursued?
LM:
“I have always loved sports, so maybe something in sports like an agent for young talented soccer players. But if not that, I think I would have been interested in business.”
MSFC: What is the most adventurous or daring thing you have ever done outside of football?
LM:
“Climbing up a mountain in Limpopo with my brother and uncle—that was intense!”
MSFC: If you could spend a day with any football legend, past or present, who would it be?
LM:
“It has to be Mario Balotelli. I would love to train with him, talk about his mindset during his prime and learn from his experiences at the highest level.”
MSFC: What is your favorite sports team outside of football and why?
LM:
“I enjoy basketball, so I would say the Los Angeles Lakers. I admire their winning mentality and the legacy of players like Kobe Bryant.”
MSFC: What is your favorite quote or motto that you live by?
LM:  “Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard. That mindset has always pushed me to keep improving.”
MSFC: What are your go-to hobbies outside of football to relax and recharge?
LM:
“I like spending time with family and friends, playing video games and watching movies. It helps me relax and reset.”
MSFC: What is your favorite movie of all time?
LM:
“Gladiator. It is a great story of perseverance, strength and fighting against the odds.”
MSFC: If you could describe your playing style in one word, what would it be and why?
LM:
“Powerful. I chose that because I use my strength, movement and finishing ability to make an impact on the pitch.”
