Mamelodi Sundowns Marks World Charity Day in Kwa-Mhlanga

HOW MAMELODI SUNDOWNS MARKS WORLD CHARITY DAY IN KWA-MHLANGA

Every year, on September 5th, the world honors World Charity Day, a commemoration of the humanitarian Mother Teresa. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate for her tireless efforts to alleviate poverty and suffering, Mother Teresa’s legacy continues to inspire acts of compassion and service around the globe.

To celebrate and affirm the large-hearted band of volunteers in local communities, who are the backbone of local charities, the Mamelodi Sundowns family visited the Joyous House of Safety and Multipurpose on World Charity Day. The shelter is home to vulnerable children in Kwa-Mhlanga, Mpumalanga.

Defender Kegan Johannes was among the Mamelodi Sundowns players in attendance. The 23-year-old expressed the importance of recognizing and supporting those who dedicate their time and skills to helping others.

“Today was about showing appreciation to the caregivers, the children and their incredible work. On behalf of Mamelodi Sundowns, we came out to honor the Joyous House for its contributions over the years. Despite their circumstances, the children were joyful. This taught me to make the most of what I have.”

Esther Mahlangu, the founder and manager of The Joyous House, was deeply moved by the recognition and support from Mamelodi Sundowns. She was particularly inspired by Coach Steve’s speech, which encouraged her to remain resilient and continue her important work.

“Having Mamelodi Sundowns visit our children was truly special. It made them feel loved and cared for, especially those who rarely have visitors. We are incredibly grateful for their support. What Coach Steve Komphela said when he spoke to us, was inspiring and motivating.”

Coach Steve Komphela emphasized the importance of such community outreach for both the players and the club. “This experience offers us a valuable opportunity to connect with those less fortunate and learn about their struggles,” he said. "It’s not just about inspiring them but also about gaining a deeper appreciation for our own lives.”

“It was crucial to involve our players in this project. I believe that they need to be exposed to such environments to develop their core human values, integrity, honesty, resilience and humility,” the senior coach continued.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ recognition of World Charity Day once again affirmed the Club’s commitment to giving back to the community and embodying the Ubuntu spirit. This act of kindness not only provided essential resources to vulnerable children but also inspired the team and the broader community to embrace the spirit of giving, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and shared responsibility.
