Mamelodi Sundowns Welcomes the FIFA Club World Cup Trophy to Africa
Author: Natashe HoveMamelodi Sundowns has once again etched its name into history, becoming the first Club in Africa to welcome the newly unveiled FIFA Club World Cup trophy. This momentous occasion is not just a milestone for the Club, but for South African football and the entire Continent. The grand unveiling took place at Chloorkop on February 6, 2025, as part of FIFA’s global trophy tour, designed to ignite excitement ahead of the expanded 32-team tournament in the United States. With the trophy visiting the home cities of all participating Clubs, its African journey began in Tshwane, a symbolic starting point for Africa’s aspirations on the world stage.
A Symbol of the Future, Inspired by the Past.
Chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns, Tlhopie Motsepe expressed gratitude for the honor of hosting the trophy and reflected on its deep symbolism when he addressed the gathering.

“Thank you, everyone, for being here, especially the Masandawana family. This trophy is more than just silverware—it is a symbol of the future, inspired by the past. A celebration of hope, excellence and pride, uniting Clubs, players, and fans in their love for the beautiful game.”

He highlighted the unique design of the trophy, emphasizing its distinctiveness from any other piece in Sundowns’ trophy cabinet.

“It draws inspiration from the Golden Voyager Records, which were sent into space in 1977 aboard NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft as a message for potential extraterrestrial life. These records carried sounds, images and cultural expressions that represented Earth’s diversity. Similarly, this trophy embodies the heritage, journey and unity of Club football worldwide.”

For Mamelodi Sundowns, the most meaningful elements of the trophy’s design reflect the Club’s core values—Hope, Excellence and Pride.

“Pride is what we felt when we became the first Club to welcome this trophy in Africa.”

Representing Africa on the Global Stage
The Chairman also took a moment to acknowledge the responsibility that Head Coach Miguel Cardoso and his squad will carry when they step onto the pitch at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

“In a few months, when Coach Miguel Cardoso and our special players step onto American soil, competing against the best Clubs in the world, they must remember: they are not just playing in Africa—they are playing for Africa.”

He emphasized that the trophy’s journey through Africa would be more than a ceremonial visit.

“This trophy, which we are sharing with our people, will leave knowing that it has seen Africa, met our people, and felt our passion. We believe that this moment will also inspire all other African clubs to push forward at the FIFA Club World Cup.”
In his closing remarks, the Chairman thanked the President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino for expanding the tournament, allowing more African Clubs to compete at the highest level.

“Expanding the FIFA Club World Cup truly makes this a global competition, giving African Clubs the recognition and representation they deserve on football’s grandest stage.”

MS: Which sports icon has influenced you the most?
PS: It has always been Cameroon’s legend Samuel Eto’o. I met him at the Mamelodi Sundowns 50th anniversary gala dinner where I got the opportunity to interact with him. We took pictures that I have framed and those memories will remain with me for life. I have always looked up to him because of his exploits during his playing days. He continues to be an inspiration.
MS: As a footballer, what drives you to work hard every day when you wake up?
PS: One thing that drives me is the quest to win the Ballon d'Or Award. I keep telling people that it is possible to win that award. I am not one to shy away from challenges because the people who are winning them are humans, therefore if they can win it, I can also clinch it someday. Whenever I wake up, the quest to win is what keeps me going. I keep saying that I am not a complete player and that is why I have said before that South Africa is yet to see the best of me.
MS: What challenges did you come across in getting to where you are today?
PS: It has not been easy to get to this level, people don’t know how tough it has been. I have battled with injuries in the past. It’s challenging and hurts when I’m unable to play due to injuries but these things always happen for a reason and at the right time it all comes together. With prayer, hard work and persistence, I have been able to keep fit and surmount those challenges that have shaped me into the person that I am today.
MS: What other sport(s) do you love to play, and how would you rate your skills?
PS: I have a deep love for athletics with a special interest in the marathon. I adore the legendary, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya because he has put Africa on the map with his blistering speed. He is a true legend of the sport.
MS: What are your goals for this season?
PS: To retain the league title, win the CAF Champions League title and continue contributing to the team’s on-pitch success.
The Namibian striker has already gotten off the mark this season and will be looking to build on his maiden campaign success with Mamelodi Sundowns.
