There Are Clubs That Compete — Then There Are Clubs That Lead Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, affectionately known as Masandawana, has evolved from humble beginnings into one of Africa’s most iconic football institutions. But beyond the impressive trophy cabinet and record-breaking performances lies something deeper — a story of identity, philosophy, and purpose.
This is the story of Ubuntu Botho. This is The Sundowns Way. Where It All Began The Club traces its roots to the 1960s in the township of Mamelodi, where it began as Marabastad Sundowns before being officially established in 1970. From the outset, Sundowns adopted the colors and flair of Brazilian football — yellow, green and blue — symbolizing creativity, joy and attacking excellence.
It was more than just football; it was an expression of community, pride and ambition.
But the road was not always smooth. Relegated in 1980, Sundowns spent five seasons in the second tier. Their return in 1985, under the visionary leadership of Zola Mahobe, marked a turning point. A new era had begun — one where style met steel and dreams began to materialize. The Rise of a Powerhouse By the late 1990s, Sundowns had established themselves as domestic titans, winning three consecutive league titles between 1998 and 2000 under coach Ted Dumitru. Players like Raphael Chukwu, Daniel Mudau, Roger Feutmba, and John Tlale became household names.
In 2003, when billionaire businessman Dr. Patrice Motsepe acquired the Club, the vision expanded. This was not just about dominance in South Africa — it was about taking African football into the future. The Sundowns Way: Ubuntu Botho, Excellence and Innovation What sets Mamelodi Sundowns apart is their commitment to The Sundowns WAY — an ethos rooted in Women, Africa and Youth development, and anchored by the philosophy of Ubuntu Botho.
Meaning “I am because we are,” Ubuntu Botho is more than a mantra. It guides the way the club plays, trains, engages with fans, and uplifts communities. It reminds every player and supporter that they are part of something greater. At Sundowns, success is not just measured in silverware, but in service, integrity and impact. A Club for All: Youth, Women and the Future Sundowns’ excellence is not confined to the First Team. The Mamelodi Sundowns Youth Academy nurtures talent across communities, producing stars grounded in skill, discipline, and purpose.
The DSTV Diski Challenge team serves as a development engine, regularly graduating players into the first team and national squads.
On the women’s side, the Club made continental history by winning the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021, and again in 2023. Mamelodi Sundowns remains the first African Club to win CAF titles in both the men’s and women’s competitions — a bold statement of its commitment to equality and excellence. African Champions, Global Contenders Sundowns' crowning achievement came in 2016, when the Brazilians won the CAF Champions League title. They followed it up with the CAF Super Cup in 2017 and were named CAF Club of the Year.
In 2023, they lifted the inaugural African Football League trophy — once again underlining their Continental dominance.
With 15 domestic league titles, more than any Club in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League era, Mamelodi Sundowns continue to set the standard. The Global Stage Awaits: 2025 FIFA Club World Cup In 2025, Masandawana embark on a new journey — representing Africa at the expanded 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Drawn in Group F alongside Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense, and Ulsan HD, Sundowns have a golden opportunity to showcase African excellence and The Sundowns Way on football’s biggest Club stage.
They carry not just the hopes of South Africa, but of a Continent. Mamelodi Sundowns FC: A legacy of style, substance, and Ubuntu Botho — from Tshwane to the world.
