MATÍAS ESQUIVEL EXCITED TO JOIN MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Mamelodi Sundowns have bolstered their squad by securing the services of the highly-rated Argentine midfielder Matías Esquivel from Club Atlético Lanús. The prolific midfielder had a stellar campaign with the Primera División team, which finished fourth during the 2023 season.

In total, Esquivel netted seven goals and provided 12 assists for Lanus in 95 matches, primarily featuring as a central midfielder. The 24-year-old now becomes the fourth Argentine to don the Masandawana jersey, following in the footsteps of Vicente Principiano in 2005, Emiliano Tade in 2021 and Junior Mendieta in 2023.

During his unveiling, Esquivel expressed his delight at joining the Brazilians, stating, “I am very happy to be here and joining this great Club is the right step for my career. When my representatives informed me about the move to Mamelodi Sundowns, I knew that it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. The Club’s ambition and success in recent years are truly impressive and I am eager to contribute to their continued achievements.”

Nicknamed “Chino,” the Argentine ace is a versatile attacking midfielder capable of playing as a central attacking midfielder, a second striker, or even a winger. He believes that his creativity and attacking prowess will complement the Bafana Ba Style setup.

“My style of play aligns well with the team’s approach and I am excited about the prospect of working with my new teammates and contributing to the team’s success. The Avellaneda-born midfielder also commended the cheerful reception he received at Chloorkop, expressing his admiration for the exceptional quality of the facilities. “The warm welcome from both the Club and the fans has made me feel at home already. The acquisition of Matías Esquivel is a significant boost to Sundowns’ ambitions for the 2023/24 season. Having already clinched victory in the inaugural edition of the African Football League, Bafana Ba Style is also aiming for success in the CAF Champions League and an unprecedented seventh successive league title. The Brazilians are also in contention for the Nedbank Cup. With Esquivel, Coach Rulani Mokwena has added another sensational South American attacking weapon to his arsenal, enhancing the team’s competitive edge.
