Muziwakhe Dladla: Celebrating the Man Behind Mamelodi Sundowns Academy
Author: Erica MathyeSuccess on the football pitch is often measured through goals, trophies and standout performances. Yet behind every successful team is a network of individuals whose dedication, organisation and leadership create the foundation for excellence.
For Mamelodi Sundowns Academy Team Manager and Administrator Muziwakhe Dladla, that commitment has once again been recognised on one of the biggest stages in South African youth football.

At the 2026 Bayhill Premier Cup in Cape Town, Dladla was named Team Manager of the Tournament for the second time in his career. The recognition came during a strong campaign that saw the Mamelodi Sundowns Academy reach the final, where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Antalyaspor JPM Cape Town.

For Dladla, the award was a moment of pride not only for himself, but also for the Academy structures that continue to set the benchmark for youth development in South Africa.

“It was truly an honour to receive this prestigious award from one of Africa’s premier youth football competitions. Winning it for the second time made the moment even more special because it validated the consistency and commitment that go into this role. Recognition at that level reflects not only individual effort but also the collective standards and culture we have built within the Academy.”
Asked on what makes a successful team manager, Muziwakhe said, “When aspiring Team Managers ask me to impart my knowledge, I educate them on the importance of going beyond the job requirements. It is to execute tasks on time, anticipate challenges before they arise and deliver solutions with precision. Consistency, discipline and attention to detail are also key values. When you are in this role, you need to be willing to learn and listen to others.”

For Dladla, however, individual accolades are secondary to the broader mission of developing a world-class Academy environment.

“This award is not just a personal milestone. It reflects the progress of our Academy and the professional standards that underpin everything we do. Beyond developing talented players, we are building a culture of excellence supported by strong systems, effective safeguarding practices and a trusted development pathway that continues to earn recognition across the continent.”

As the Mamelodi Sundowns Academy prepares for another busy year of domestic and international tournaments, Dladla remains focused on raising standards even higher. His ambition is to continue contributing to an environment where talent is developed, character is shaped and future stars are given every opportunity to succeed, while ensuring that Mamelodi Sundowns remains the benchmark for football development in Africa.
A Day in the Life of a Team Manager: Tournament Edition
While supporters witness the action on matchday, a team manager’s work begins long before the first whistle.
A typical tournament day starts with an early-morning meeting alongside the technical team to review the previous day’s activities, discuss logistics and receive medical updates on players.
From there, attention turns to coordinating with hotel staff, confirming meals, organising daily schedules and ensuring players have everything required for training and matches.
Throughout the day, communication remains constant as he provides updates to club management, parents and other stakeholders while also preparing programmes for the following day.
Perhaps most importantly, he helps maintain team morale, creating an environment that encourages discipline, professionalism and peak performance.
It is demanding work, often carried out away from the spotlight, but for Muziwakhe Dladla, it is a responsibility he embraces with passion, purpose and strong commitment to excellence.
