Nomthandazo Matshidiso: Seven Countries, Two Stars and One Unbreakable Love
Author: John AliuFor many supporters, football is a passion. For Nomthandazo Matshidiso, the Provincial Chairperson in the Free State, Mamelodi Sundowns became a way of life.

From celebrating the Club’s first CAF Champions League triumph in 2016 in Cairo to witnessing history again a decade later as Masandawana secured their second African star in Rabat, Nomthandazo has lived through every high, every challenge and every unforgettable moment.
Her journey as a member of the Yellow Nation has taken her far beyond the stadium gates. What began as simple admiration has grown into a lifelong devotion that has carried her across seven different countries, creating memories, friendships and experiences she never imagined when she first fell in love with the Club.

“I have supported Sundowns since I was young. My interest in joining the branches started in 2004, shortly after the Club was purchased by Dr Patrice Motsepe. As a young woman, I looked up to him as a role model because of his leadership, vision and passion for the game.”

Like millions of supporters, Nomthandazo still vividly remembers the emotions of 2016 when Sundowns conquered Africa for the first time. Yet she believes the second star carries a different kind of significance.
“The first star was historic because it was something we had never experienced before. It showed that Sundowns could reach the summit of African football. The second star is special because it proves 2016 was not a once-off. It shows consistency, growth and excellence over time. Both triumphs will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Over the past decade, she has witnessed countless unforgettable moments — league title celebrations, domestic cup triumphs and magical nights on the continental stage. But for her, the Club’s greatest achievement goes beyond the trophies: it is the way Sundowns has continued to evolve, season after season.

“The Club has grown tremendously. We have always kept pushing. I was in Egypt last year when we lost to Pyramids in the final and it was heartbreaking. And now here we are, champions again. That ambition inspires supporters to dream bigger, too. We are the first PSL Club to win eight straight league titles, and that shows the mentality that drives this team.”

For Nomthandazo, one of the most rewarding parts of being a Masandawana supporter has been the opportunities that came with following the team.
“One thing many people do not realise is that Sundowns has allowed me to travel to seven different countries. Football has taken me to places I never thought I would visit. It has introduced me to different cultures, new friendships and unforgettable experiences. That is something I will always be grateful for.”

Despite the Club’s remarkable success, she insists that trophies alone are not what keep her coming back.

“My loyalty has never depended on results. Of course, we love winning, but being a Sundowns supporter is about belonging to something bigger than yourself. The Club represents excellence, unity, identity and ambition. Those values stay with you whether the team wins or loses. My blood is yellow.”

Asked what separates the 2026 CAF Champions League–winning team from the side that lifted the trophy in 2016, Nomthandazo sees a powerful thread connecting both generations.
“Both teams had quality, belief and a winning mentality. They understood what it means to represent this badge. But the 2026 team feels unique because they achieved success after years of carrying expectations. They embraced the pressure and delivered when it mattered most. Many thought we would have a barren season, but we ended it with the most important piece of silverware. It shows that true greatness shines brightest when others doubt you. Every time I see those two stars, I think about the journey — the players, coaches, supporters and everyone who contributed. It is a symbol of everything the Club has worked for.”

As she reflects on a decade that began with one star and now shines with two, Nomthandazo has a simple but heartfelt message for the players and technical team who made the latest triumph possible.

“Thank you for believing, for sacrificing and for continuing to raise the standards of this Football Club. You have made the supporters proud and created memories that will last forever. The players must not be too hard on themselves for not winning the league — they went one better. They brought home the star that defines eras. This team has shown that nothing is impossible when we stand together. Next year, we also want to celebrate the PSL trophy again.”

And for younger members of the Yellow Nation experiencing continental glory for the first time, she offers a message rooted in pride, humility and the spirit of Ubuntu.
“Enjoy every moment. Celebrate the victories, learn from the setbacks and never take success for granted. What we are witnessing today is special. Support this Club with pride because you are part of something truly extraordinary. Always rally behind the team. Loyalty is what makes us a family.”
From one star to two, from local stadiums to seven countries across the continent and beyond, Nomthandazo Matshidiso’s story is a reminder that being part of the Yellow Nation is about far more than football. It is about belonging to a family, sharing unforgettable experiences and witnessing history together.
