Remembering Angelo TsichlasAuthor: NJ HoveOn Tuesday, 24 June 2025, the Mamelodi Sundowns family suffered a heartbreaking loss with the passing of Mr. Angelo Tsichlas, a stalwart of South African football, following a tragic car crash in Pretoria. His passing has left a deep void not only in the hearts of those who knew and loved him but also across the broader football fraternity, who understood and appreciated the enormous contribution he made to the beautiful game.Angelo was more than a football administrator. He was the embodiment of dedication, sacrifice and unwavering belief in the potential of Mamelodi Sundowns. He served as Chairman, Technical Director and Coach at different phases of the Club’s history.
In 1988, as Mamelodi Sundowns stood on the brink of collapse following the financial troubles of former owner Zola Mahobe, Standard Bank repossessed the Club. It was in this moment of uncertainty that Angelo and his wife, Natasha Tsichlas, stepped forward. Working together with the Krok brothers, they negotiated with the bank and ultimately saved the Club from liquidation. A new company was formed, and together they acquired 100% ownership of Sundowns, setting in motion one of the most pivotal moments in the Club’s history.
Angelo, alongside Chilean coach Mario Tuane, took over a Club already sitting at the top of the league and turned ambition into reality, leading Sundowns to their first-ever league title. When Tuane stepped aside, Angelo took over as caretaker coach, guiding the club until the appointment of Trott Moloto. His deep understanding of football, tactical intelligence and calm leadership laid the foundations for what was to come. At a time when South African football was re-emerging on the global stage, the Tsichlas family’s stewardship of Sundowns gave the Club credibility, stability and ambition.
Under their leadership, Mamelodi Sundowns began to set standards. Natasha Tsichlas, who served as the Club’s Managing Director, worked tirelessly alongside Angelo to professionalize operations, attract top talent and instill a culture of excellence. Their efforts culminated in three consecutive Premier Soccer League titles, setting a precedent and a mindset of winning as a habit.
When the Krok brothers sold their stake, the Tsichlas family remained committed to the Club’s vision and later partnered with Dr. Patrice Motsepe, who would eventually become the Club’s sole owner. Even after selling their stake in 2004, the Tsichlas family remained close to the Sundowns family. Angelo would return in an executive role as Technical Director on an interim basis, always ready to serve the Club.
As Mamelodi Sundowns proudly celebrates an unprecedented 15 Premier Soccer League titles, we are reminded that the journey toward this greatness was paved by courageous visionaries like Angelo Tsichlas.
In a statement, Club Chairman Thlopie Motsepe and the board expressed their sorrow and deep appreciation: “Mamelodi Sundowns is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Angelo Tsichlas. He was a central figure in the Club’s history, helping to save and build Sundowns into one of the most successful and admired football Clubs on the continent. His leadership, passion and love for the game will never be forgotten. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Natasha and the entire Tsichlas family. Angelo will forever be remembered as a legend of this Club.”
This was echoed by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, who said: “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Angelo Tsichlas, who was an outstanding football administrator and a close friend. My heartfelt condolences go to Natasha and the Tsichlas family. Angelo, Natasha, and the Tsichlas family will always have a special place in my heart and the hearts of the Motsepe family and the Mamelodi Sundowns family. We will all support and comfort the Tsichlas family during this painful and difficult period. Angelo and Natasha made enormous contributions with the Krok family and, before them, former Sundowns owner Zola Mahobe, to the development and growth of Sundowns. We are all immensely grateful to them for laying the foundations for the current success of Sundowns. Angelo Tsichlas will forever live in our hearts and minds. May Angelo Tsichlas’ soul rest in peace.”
Angelo was not alone in his contribution. His wife, Natasha Tsichlas, currently serves as Vice-President of the South African Football Association (SAFA) and remains one of the most respected figures in African football administration. Together, they were not just custodians of a Club but champions of the game, both at home and across the continent.
The Tsichlas legacy is a reminder that football is not just won on the field but built off it — in boardrooms, in late-night meetings, in moments of crisis and unwavering belief. Their journey with Sundowns is forever etched into the very identity of the Club. Forever Yellow, Forever in Our Hearts
As we mourn the loss of Angelo Tsichlas, we also celebrate his life — a life that shaped champions, built dreams and left behind a legacy that will inspire generations.
The Mamelodi Sundowns family bows its head in respect and gratitude.
Rest in Peace, Angelo Tsichlas. A true giant of the game.
