SIYABONGA MABENA NAMED ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG TALENTS IN WORLD FOOTBALL BackpagePixAuthor: Erica MathyeMamelodi Sundowns’ Academy has once again proven itself to be a breeding ground for top football talent, with another rising star stepping into the global spotlight. Recently, the British newspaper The Guardian named Mamelodi Sundowns forward Siyabonga Mabena as one of the best young talents in the world, a testament not only to his skills but also to the Club’s resolute commitment to developing future football stars.BackpagePixMabena made his senior debut in March 2023 during a 5-1 win over Royal AM in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). In September of the same year, he scored in a 3-1 victory against Stellenbosch FC, becoming the youngest player in PSL history to net a league goal at just 16 years old. Despite his age, he effortlessly adapted to the team’s playing style, showcasing the academy’s success in preparing players for the highest levels of competition. Since then, he has made over a dozen appearances, with many in South Africa and beyond recognizing his rising talent.
Mabena also made headlines at the 2022 COSAFA Under-17 Championship, scoring nine goals in five games and signaling the arrival of a player with extraordinary potential. Additionally, he was part of the Amajita squad that recently won the COSAFA U20 Championship, securing qualification for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations under coach Raymond Mdaka. The Club’s Academy has cultivated a culture of excellence, where young players are developed not just for today but for the future.
Phuphu Mohlaba, the Diski Team assistant coach, recalls his first time seeing Mabena in action: “The first time I saw Mabena up close was during a friendly with the first team at Royal Marang. He was so good on the ball. Having seen him perform at the Under-17 COSAFA Championship earlier, it was wonderful to witness his talent firsthand.”
Coach Mohlaba credits the joy and freedom with which Mabena plays as key to his success—attributes nurtured in the academy’s supportive and skill-focused environment: “He plays football that warms the heart. It’s rare to see a player combine such natural ability with a genuine love for the game.”
Mamelodi Sundowns’ success in developing players like Mabena is part of a broader culture of excellence, a commitment that runs from the top of the organization to the youngest academy player.
“The recognition of Mabena, alongside Ronwen Williams’ Ballon d’Or nomination, speaks to the dedication the Club has to cultivating talent. It’s not just about individual players; it’s a reflection of the incredible work done by everyone at the Club,” Mohlaba adds. BackpagePixMabena’s rise is just beginning, having already claimed two league titles and the African Football League with Mamelodi Sundowns. His international recognition on The Guardian’s Next Generation list of top talents born in 2007 further cements his status as one to watch. This success reflects the exceptional quality of the Mamelodi Sundowns Academy, renowned for producing players ready to compete on the global stage.
