Dr. Nokufa Makae (NM) (Team Doctor): It has been a privilege to work with such a talented, driven group of women. This season was not without its obstacles, but the way the players and staff pulled together shows the character of this team. The environment at Mamelodi Sundowns is special — everyone is committed to excellence. To be part of another chapter in this Cub’s history is deeply fulfilling.Hannah Dwyer (HD) (Sport Scientist): It is such an honour to be part of this incredible journey with Sundowns Ladies. Every season brings its own challenges, but this one has been especially rewarding. The team’s hunger, professionalism and unity have been exceptional.Q2: What was your specific role within the technical setup, and how did your contribution help the team achieve its goals this season? NM: I am responsible for the medical and overall wellness of the squad. This includes injury prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and monitoring players’ mental and physical readiness. Working closely with the technical and conditioning staff, we individualize recovery programs and carefully track workloads. This holistic approach helped reduce injuries and ensured the squad could perform consistently in a demanding calendar.HD: As a sports scientist, my role revolves around keeping the players at peak physical performance. I oversee strength and conditioning, recovery sessions and monitor workload and performance metrics. By ensuring our players remain fit, resilient and injury-free, the team can maintain consistency throughout the season and execute the tactical plans seamlessly. It is about giving the players the physical platform to shine.Q3: The squad showed remarkable consistency and fitness despite the long campaign. From your perspective, what key factors made that possible? NM: Planning, discipline and collaboration across all departments made the difference. Our players’ commitment to recovery, conditioning and mental readiness was exceptional. Data-driven training, proper nutrition, hydration and individualized care were central. Without the players buying into professionalism at every level, our consistency would not have been possible.HD: Discipline and clear communication were crucial. From day one, players embraced the philosophy that physical readiness is a foundation for success. The technical, medical and performance teams worked in harmony, aligning fitness, tactical and recovery goals. Nutrition, mental wellness and injury prevention were given equal importance, allowing the team to sustain intensity throughout the season.Q4: Which match or moment from this season stands out to you as the most memorable or emotionally rewarding? NM: For me, it was our victory over the University of Fort Hare, our first game after COSAFA. The players could have been disheartened, but they responded with grit, belief and hunger. That match reignited our league momentum and showcased the mental toughness that defines this team.HD: Honestly, it is the everyday moments — the smiles, handshakes and hugs during training or at breakfast on camp. Seeing players implement months of hard work on the pitch with confidence and energy is deeply satisfying. Those moments make the behind-the-scenes hours worthwhile.Q5: Many young players have stepped up impressively this year. What has been the approach in nurturing emerging talent within the squad? NM: Our approach is holistic. Young players are taught recovery, nutrition and mental health alongside technical skills. The senior players provide guidance and mentorship. We want them to develop good habits early, so their focus can remain on improving tactically and physically.HD: We have created a safe environment for young players to learn, make mistakes and grow. Physically, we focus on building resilience and educating them on recovery and discipline. Senior players act as mentors, guiding them to adapt to Sundowns’ standards. It is a culture of collective improvement.Q6: Festive message — as we wrap up an unforgettable year, what message of gratitude or encouragement would you like to share with supporters, colleagues, and players? NM: Thank you to our supporters for standing with us through triumphs and challenges. To the technical and medical teams — your collaboration makes success possible. And to the players, your courage, commitment and heart make Sundowns special. Let us carry this spirit into the new year!HD: To our supporters, thank you for your constant energy and support, which motivates us every matchday. To the technical staff, your hard work makes this journey possible. And to the players, your hunger, resilience and unity are truly inspiring. I hope everyone enjoys rest and joy this festive season.Q7: What does Christmas mean to you personally, and how do you usually spend it with family or loved ones? NM: For me, Christmas represents faith, gratitude and unity. I spend it enjoying a home-cooked meal, laughter and quality time with my family. It is a moment to chill and appreciate the people who support us year-round.HD: Christmas is about gratitude and togetherness. We pause to appreciate our blessings and reconnect with loved ones. We usually gather for a big lunch and exchange small gifts, but the true gift is being present with family.Q8: Do you have a favorite Christmas memory, tradition, or meal that you look forward to every year? NM: Our family Christmas lunch is always a highlight. We enjoy traditional dishes, music and reflecting on the year. Those small, joyful moments make the season truly special.HD: Starting Christmas morning with music, laughter and a big breakfast is a family tradition. And I can never resist a perfectly roasted chicken with all the trimmings — it is my festive favorite!Q9: If the team were to have a Christmas party, who in the squad or technical team would you nominate as Santa Claus — and why? NM: Boitumelo Rabale! She is full of energy, positivity and effortlessly lifts the room’s mood. She would spread cheer perfectly as Santa.HD: The team manager! Always organized, calm and cheerful, they bring balance and positivity to everyone — just like Santa.Q10: Finally, what are your hopes and goals for the new year — both for yourself and the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team?
