After exciting spectators at the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporter Appreciation Day earlier this year, Refiloe Maele Phoolo, popularly known as Cassper Nyovest, linked up with the reigning PSL champions in September for a very special training session with the Brazilians of Mzansi.

The award-winning South African musician came to Chloorkop for a unique conditioning workout, as he fine-tuned his sharpness and agility ahead of his celebrity boxing bout against fellow rapper, Priddy Ugly, in Menlyn (Pretoria).

As the first team prepared for their MTN 8 semi-final first leg clash against the Buccaneers at Orlando Stadium, the 31-year-old spent a day training with Bafana Ba Style.

Best known for his awe-inspiring success story in the entertainment industry which has seen him become one of South Africa’s top artists, Cassper spoke about how he fell in love with sports, particularly boxing.

“I grew up in a home where sport was the order of the day. My father was a soccer coach, while my grandfather was a big fan of boxing. As a result, my love for sport was born because of them. While growing up, I loved watching a show on SABC 2 called Blow by Blow which further helped me understand boxing. Through the celebrity exhibition matches, I believe more light is being shone on the sport across South Africa and beyond,” said the musician.

The Mahikeng-born artist spoke about his favourite boxing icon, “I am a big fan of Mike Tyson and how he got a generation of sport fanatics to follow boxing is remarkable. I love his story and how he turned his life around despite the shortcomings he encountered early in life. He is also a big inspiration to my boxing career due to his fighting style, aggressiveness, and his desire to be the best. As a die-hard fan of Tyson, I have ‘Iron Mike’ tattooed on my upper leg.”

As an avid football supporter, Cassper weighed in on the players and countries he is tipping to impress at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“I am a massive fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, but I don’t think Portugal can win the World Cup because they are quite inconsistent. Rather, I think Brazil will win because they have a very young and exciting squad that is led by Neymar. I do however believe England stands a chance due to the quality of youngsters like Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham, and so many others. But if they play Harry Maguire, they will not win,” the rapper chuckled.

Mufasa also hailed the club who sealed a partnership with EA Sports that saw Mamelodi Sundowns become the only African addition in the latest edition of the world-renowned FIFA 23 video game. “It is quite dope for the club to have this partnership with EA Sports. It is a perfect way to capture the attention of the younger generation. Sundowns is a forward-thinking club, and I am not surprised by how they are dominating South African football.”

Cassper mentioned some of the toughest opponents he has faced on the console, “I
play the game daily and the top three difficult opponents I have ever faced are Julio Bianchi (professional FIFA player), Chad Ochocinco Johnson (former NFL wide receiver), and Trevor Noah (world-renowned comedian). I can handle other opponents with ease and will be rocking FIFA 23 with Masandawana.”

Following his widely publicised visit to Chloorkop, Mufasa went on to clinch a historic victory against Priddy Ugly, knocking him out during the first round of their sensational exhibition boxing match. It is safe to say that Cassper enjoyed his time with Bafana Ba Style.
