Trusted and Triumphant:
Keanu Cupido’s Debut Season Brilliance
Author: John AliuWhen Keanu Cupido returned to Mamelodi Sundowns in January, a club that he played for in the Academy, he was well aware of the size of the Club and the magnitude of the brand, the weight of the badge and the sky-high expectations that come with it. But in just a matter of months, the composed central defender did more than just find his feet; he helped the Brazilians secure their eighth consecutive Premier Soccer League (PSL) title and went on to start all three matches at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
For a player with limited game time in the Betway Premiership for Mamelodi Sundowns, stepping onto the global stage at the FIFA Club World Cup might have seemed overwhelming. But for Cupido, it was the opportunity he had been preparing for his entire career.

“It was a massive stage; there is no doubt about that. Coming in midway through the season, there was pressure to prove myself, especially at a Club with such high standards. But I have always believed that as a professional footballer, you should be ready when your moment comes.”
Behind that readiness was a solid support system. Cupido speaks with heartfelt gratitude about the role his family played in helping him meet the moment.
“My wife was instrumental during this period. Her belief in me and constant encouragement meant the world to me. She reminded me of my worth during moments of doubt and helped me stay grounded when everything started moving quickly. That kind of support is something every player needs, especially when transitioning into a Club like Sundowns.”

Competing at the FIFA Club World Cup was more than just a line on Cupido’s résumé. It was a deeply personal experience that symbolized the trust the Club placed in him.
“Being selected to start every game at a tournament of that magnitude was a tremendous honour. I felt a deep responsibility to justify the coach’s faith in me, not just through my performance, but also in how I conducted myself on and off the pitch. Wearing this jersey in front of a global audience felt surreal. Before every game, I reminded myself that this was not just about me; it was about representing a Club that consistently pushes boundaries and strives to be the best in Africa and beyond.”

Among the standout moments of the Club World Cup campaign, one memory will stay with Cupido forever: lining up against, and eventually swapping jerseys with, Chelsea and Brazil legend Thiago Silva.
“That moment. I do not even have the right words. Growing up, Thiago Silva was everything to me. I studied how he defended, how he read the game and how he led. I even named my son after him. So, to not only share the pitch with him but to swap jerseys, it was the biggest moment of my career so far. I looked at that jersey after the match and realized how far I had come.”
Now, as he looks to the future, Cupido is not content to rest on recent achievements. He knows this is just the beginning of his journey in Yellow and Blue.
