Wendy Shongwe and Gugu Dhlamini Embrace a New Era at Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Team
Author: John AliuEvery new season brings fresh opportunities, new challenges and the chance to write a different story. For Wendy Shongwe and Gugu Dhlamini, the 2026 campaign represents exactly that. Having recently joined Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, the duo arrived at Chloorkop at a time when women’s football in South Africa continues to grow in stature, competitiveness and quality.
As two ambitious players eager to make their mark in the famous yellow and blue, both understand the expectations that come with representing one of the continent’s most successful clubs. Rather than being intimidated by the challenge, they are embracing it.
For Shongwe, who played for the University of Pretoria (TUKS Ladies), the prospect of competing alongside some of the country’s finest players is an opportunity she has long anticipated. Her relationship with some of the players began in the South African women’s national team, and she also spent time with her then prospective teammates during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. “This is the kind of environment every player wants to be part of. You are surrounded by quality every day and that pushes you to improve constantly. I am looking forward to learning, contributing to the team and challenging myself to reach new levels in my game.”
The midfielder also believes the growing quality across women’s football will make the season particularly exciting.
“Women’s football continues to grow and every season becomes more competitive. Teams are improving, players are developing and supporters are becoming more invested. That is good for everyone because it pushes the standard of the league even higher.” Dhlamini shares a similar excitement as she prepares for the next chapter of her career. The talented attacker believes joining a club with such high standards provides the perfect platform to continue developing both on and off the field.
“When you join a club like Sundowns Ladies, you immediately understand the level that is expected. That motivates you to work harder every day because everyone here wants to improve and help the team succeed. It is a culture that inspires excellence.”
With a new season on the horizon, Dhlamini, who joined from the University of Johannesburg Ladies, is eager to experience the journey ahead and contribute wherever she can.
“I am excited about what lies ahead. There are always new goals to achieve and new memories to create. My focus is on helping the team, continuing to grow as a player, and making the most of every opportunity that comes my way,” said Gugu, who was crowned the Engen Knockout Challenge Striker of the Tournament in 2024 and 2025. As preparations continue for another demanding campaign, both players arrive with fresh energy, clear ambitions and a determination to contribute to the next chapter of success at Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
For Shongwe and Dhlamini, the journey is only just beginning.
